Real-world experience. Thoughtful guidance. Better care for backyard birds.
Caring for chickens and ducks is rewarding, but there's far more involved than providing food, fresh water, and a safe place to sleep. At Love Your Flock, we believe informed, confident keepers are the foundation of healthier, happier flocks. Whether you're considering your first flock, hoping to deepen your knowledge, or exploring opportunities to work with backyard birds, our hands-on educational experiences are designed to help you learn through observation, conversation, and practical experience.
Flock Care Immersion
Thinking about chickens? Experience what caring for a flock really involves—before bringing birds home.
It's easy to fall in love with the idea of keeping backyard chickens/ducks. But what does caring for them actually look like, day after day, season after season? Our Flock Care Immersion offers prospective keepers a unique opportunity to step into the everyday world of professional flock care.
Spend time alongside Love Your Flock, observing real-world care routines, asking questions, and gaining a clearer understanding of the time, effort, knowledge, and resources involved in keeping chickens/ducks well.
This isn't a classroom presentation or a checklist of beginner tips. It's a firsthand introduction to the realities of responsible flock keeping.
What You'll Explore
Every immersion is a little different, reflecting the flocks, environments, and seasonal conditions encountered. Topics may include:
-
Daily care and observation: Feeding, watering, sanitation, routines, and recognizing changes in flock behavior.
-
Health and wellness: What healthy birds look and behave like, common warning signs, preventive care, and the importance of veterinary support.
-
Coops and predator protection: Understanding what makes a safe, functional living environment.
-
Cleanliness and biosecurity: Managing waste, bedding, equipment, and practices that help reduce disease risks.
-
Enrichment and natural behaviors: Supporting opportunities for birds to forage, dust bathe, explore, and express natural behaviors.
-
Seasonal responsibilities: Preparing for heat, freezing temperatures, changing daylight, and other challenges of keeping birds in the Northeast.
-
The bigger commitment: Expenses, travel arrangements, emergency planning, and the realities of caring for animals that depend on you every day.
What to Expect
Your private immersion is designed around your interests and experience level.
Depending on scheduling, weather, biosecurity considerations, and participating property owners' permission, your experience may include accompanying Love Your Flock on selected flock-care visits or observing guided demonstrations of everyday care.
You'll have opportunities to ask questions throughout the experience, followed by a personal conversation about your own plans and next steps.
Duration: Approximately 3 hours
Format: Private, guided field experience
Location: Selected locations in the Hudson Valley and Catskills
Introductory investment: $295 per person

A Thoughtful First Step
Our goal isn't to convince everyone to keep chickens.
It's to help you make an informed decision—one that's right for you and, most importantly, for the birds. Because sometimes the most responsible choice is deciding you're ready. And sometimes it's realizing you're not quite there yet.
